Short answer: A good small business website does three things fast: it tells visitors what you do and where you work, it proves you’re trustworthy, and it makes contacting you effortless. It should load quickly on a phone, be built with SEO from day one, and be kept up to date every month. Looks matter, but a site that gets found and gets calls matters more.
I’m Don MG. I’ve been building websites for 21 years, and I’ve worked with hundreds of real US businesses, from clinics to contractors to local shops. Here’s what I’ve learned about what works.
What should a small business website include?
Before colors and fonts, make sure your site covers the basics a customer looks for in the first few seconds:
- A clear headline that says what you do and who you serve. “Family chiropractor in Coral Gables” beats “Welcome to our website.”
- Your phone number at the top, clickable on mobile.
- One main call to action per page: call, book, or request a quote.
- A page for each main service, not one page that lists everything.
- Real photos of you, your team, and your work. Stock photos make people trust you less.
- Reviews from real customers, with names when you have permission.
- Your service area spelled out (city, region, or nationwide).
- Simple contact form with only the fields you truly need.
If a visitor can’t tell what you do and how to reach you in five seconds, they hit the back button.
Why does small business web design need SEO from the start?
A beautiful site nobody finds is an expensive business card. SEO isn’t something you sprinkle on later. It’s built into the structure:
- One page per service and location, so Google knows exactly what each page is about.
- Page titles and headings that use the words customers type, like “website maintenance services” instead of “Our Solutions.”
- Fast loading. Compress images, use good hosting, and skip heavy sliders and auto-playing videos.
- Mobile first. Most local searches happen on a phone, so design for the phone and then check the desktop.
- Clean technical setup: SSL certificate (the padlock), a sitemap, and a connected Google Search Console.
- A complete Google Business Profile that matches the name, phone, and website on your site.
This is why I always say web design and SEO belong together. Building them separately usually means paying twice.
How do you make a website that AI assistants recommend?
More people now ask ChatGPT, Google’s AI answers, or other assistants things like “who can fix my website?” These tools pull from pages that answer questions clearly. To show up:
- Answer common questions directly in plain language, near the top of the page.
- Use headings phrased as questions your customers actually ask.
- Add an FAQ section with structured data (FAQ schema) so machines can read it.
- Be specific about services, location, and who you help. Vague pages get skipped.
- Stay consistent across your site, Google profile, and social pages.
Good news: what helps AI also helps Google and humans. Clear beats clever.
What are the most common mistakes small business websites make?
These come up again and again when business owners ask me to look at their sites:
- Expired SSL certificate. Browsers show a “Not secure” warning and visitors leave.
- Old phone numbers or addresses still sitting in footers, popups, or contact pages.
- No updates in years. Outdated plugins are one of the most common ways sites get hacked.
- No backups. When something breaks, there’s nothing to restore.
- Slow pages from oversized images.
- Contact forms that don’t actually deliver emails. Test yours today.
- Too much text about “us” and not enough about what the customer gets.
Most of these are quick fixes, but only if someone is watching.
Do I need a website if I have social media?
Yes. Social media is rented space. The platform controls who sees your posts, and rules change overnight. Your website is the one place you own. It’s where Google sends searchers, where your ads should land, and where people go to check if you’re legit before they call. Use social media to get attention, and your website to turn that attention into customers.
What happens after the website launches?
Launch day is the start, not the finish. A website needs regular care:
- Updates for WordPress, themes, and plugins
- Backups stored somewhere other than the website itself
- Security and uptime checks
- Fresh content like new services, photos, reviews, and articles
- Reviewing results in Search Console and Analytics, then improving pages that underperform
- Ads (Google and Meta) sent to pages built to convert, not to your homepage
This ongoing care is where real small business growth comes from. Sites that get attention every month keep climbing. Sites that get ignored slowly break.
Does it matter where my web designer is located?
Less than it used to. Donstudio is fully online, so we work with businesses in Miami and South Florida and across the whole US. What matters more is that your designer understands your local market, answers when you call, and builds pages targeted to the cities you serve. If you’re in Miami, your site should say so clearly, in English and, when it fits your customers, in Spanish too.
Quick checklist: is your small business website working?
- [ ] Phone number visible and clickable on mobile
- [ ] Clear headline: what you do and where
- [ ] Padlock (SSL) showing in the browser
- [ ] Loads in a few seconds on a phone
- [ ] Separate page for each main service
- [ ] Real photos and real reviews
- [ ] Contact form tested this month
- [ ] Google Business Profile matches your site
- [ ] Plugins updated and backups running
- [ ] Search Console connected
If you checked fewer than eight, your site is likely losing you customers.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to build a small business website?
It depends on the number of pages and how ready your content is. Having your services, photos, and reviews gathered beforehand is what speeds things up most.
What’s the best platform for a small business website?
WordPress is a strong choice for most small businesses because it’s flexible, SEO-friendly, and you own it. The key is keeping it updated and backed up.
Can I update my website myself?
Yes. A well-built site lets you change text and photos easily. Many owners still prefer monthly care so updates, security, and backups are handled for them.
How do I get my website to show up on Google?
Build pages around the words customers search, make the site fast and mobile-friendly, connect Google Search Console, complete your Google Business Profile, and add helpful content regularly.
Does Donstudio work with businesses outside Miami?
Yes. Donstudio is fully online and works with small businesses in Miami, South Florida, and across the US.
